A NEW TRAIL RUNNING SERIES IS LAUNCHED
UTMB Group and The IRONMAN Group join forces to launch the pioneering new UTMB® World Series.
We have all collectively witnessed the growing popularity of trail running. Many people are increasingly taking the time to explore nature, practice mindfulness and challenge their bodies in different ways. So we’re excited to announce that our parent company, The IRONMAN Group, has partnered with UTMB Group that will revolutionize the sport of trail running and bring our community together through a new, clearer structure that is accessible to all.
The creation of the new UTMB® World Series will unite the most exciting events on the planet with the high standards, values and spirit of UTMB® and provide runners with exclusive access to UTMB® Mont-Blanc, home of the prestigious UTMB® World Series Finals.
At mozart 100®, we are proud to become part of the UTMB World Series, which will debut in 2022.
The UTMB® World Series will be founded on the UTMB® values of rising above, fair play, respect for people and the environment, and solidarity. That means more great places for you to hit the trails, more events you’ll love, and a clearer qualification system to reach trail running’s lighthouse event, UTMB® Mont-Blanc.

New opportunities for trail runners
Beginning in 2022, the UTMB® World Series will include four event levels: UTMB® World Series Finals, UTMB® World Series Majors, UTMB® World Series Events and UTMB® World Series Qualifiers. The UTMB® World Series will offer new benefits for its runners, such as priority access to registration, as well as new and more precise sporting criteria that take into account the unique characteristics of trail running. This includes keeping the Performance Index as an exclusive UTMB Group asset and creating new race classification categories.
Performance Index: runners familiar with the sport’s first-ever ranking system will continue to be able to use it on the new UTMB® World Series platform to evaluate and compare their performance levels. Runners with a Performance Index will have priority access to UTMB® World Series and UTMB® World Series Majors races regardless of their performance level.
New Categories Based on Mileage Effort: There will be four UTMB® World Series categories, including 20K, 50K, 100K and 100M, based on Mileage Effort, the globally recognized formula for measuring race distance in trail running that takes into account both distance and elevation gain to calculate perceived distance. For example, 100M means 100 miles and represents a 170-kilometer effort.
Consultation with top athletes: in determining the athletic structure of the UTMB® World Series, a large group of top international runners were consulted to allow their collective feedback to be considered. Under the new qualification system, the best trail runners in the world must qualify by competing in UTMB® World Series Majors or UTMB® World Series events over a 15-month period to gain access to the UTMB® World Series Finals.
– The top 10 male and top 10 female runners in each of the 50K, 100K and 100M categories at UTMB® World Series Majors will win a spot to the next edition of the UTMB® World Series Finals race in the same category.
– The top three male and top three female runners in each of the 50K, 100K and 100M categories at UTMB® World Series events will win a spot for the next edition of the UTMB® World Series Finals race of the same category.
